$124.75 to renew my tabs. Why do things cost money? This has been your First World Update™.

Not bad. My 2001 car bottomed out a few years ago at $31/year. Basically no tax left, just the tag fee. Hooray for depreciation — sure beats the $600/yr we paid for the wife’s Odyssey when it was brand new (now down to $300 or so)

It’s $103.50 in Illinois so not too crazy in my mind, mine are due end of July and I really don’t want to pay but I also don’t want a ticket.

My nose bleeds for you...
Plus another $550 for compulsory third party insurance...and the car is a 2000 Subaru Forester so it’s only worth about a grand anyway!!

An annual tax on the value of a vehicle blows my mind. I think I’ll stick with New Mexico’s flat 3% excise tax at purchase and $27-$62/year registration fee (depending on the class of vehicle/GVWR of light truck).

Escrow?

You have misunderstood. The value of the vehicle is of no relevance to registration cost. The registration fee is a set cost, the motor vehicle tax is based on the gross vehicle mass and that last few was a one off for the new plate. I could be registering a new car in the same weight class for the same coin...

That’s why we don’t own a fleet of cars.

Yeah. Closed on a house today so it’s down payment and insurance and fees and all that. Still haven’t seen the house. And I found out the current owner’s shipping company no showed on them so they aren’t out yet. So suddenly I’m a landlord of tenants I’ve never met in a house I’ve never been to. Life is strange.

I almost ended up owning one of those “200sx”s once. I was trying to trade my integra with no title for something with a title. The other guy backed out though. Which was fine because I ended up with a 97 Accord instead

Is that just at purchase or annual?

Every year...rego for two vehicles nearing twenty years old is a smidge over two grand every year. It is what it is...
At purchase, you pay stamp duty on the purchase price. Can’t remember the rate but it was around $600 for a $20k spend the last time we looked.

Ouch where I live you pay about 200 for titile and plates on a new car plus 5.5% tax on the purchase price, (550/10,000) on my last car it was 10,000 and all said and done I paid 10,730. Annually it’s 85 bucks or 115 if you have custom plates.
One of the few good things about living in Wi is that it’s cheap to own a car, and we don’t have inspections.
